A Beginning [Jul. 19th, 2007|08:56 pm]

Things have been a little sticky for me lately, but this seemed like a good opportunity to rejoin (at least a little bit) the land of the internets. :) It was a bit of an adventure...I've never been great at poetry, and I'm really rusty at this point. I'll try to find something gorgeously worded sometime soon. :)

Summer Challenge [Jul. 11th, 2007|01:51 pm]

I tried for something new and completely original for this challenge, but it's just not coming yet, so I'll get something borrowed and something retro out of the way. Maybe if I come up with something later, it'll show up, too.

Meanwhile...

[music |Wicked Soundtrack - "For Good"]

Okay, here is my prose. I am not good at poetry.
This piece doesn't have a title, but I wrote it a week or so ago. It's basically how I feel currently. There will be at least one more, but I need to work that one a bit more.

Here is my first entry for the Capture Me summer challenge. I wrote this yesterday, and I think it really captures where my head is at. Feedback welcome.

Good news! 100% of the people polled agree that our 3_muses summer challenge should be an annual event. (Of course, the only people polled were me and futma.)

As the follow up to last year's "Capture the Moment" Summer Challenge, this year we offer:

The "Capture Me" Summer Challenge

Dates: July 4, 2007 - August 4, 2007
Entry type: Any form (metered, free verse, haiku, limerick, lyric, prose, whatever), original or credited to a published author
Multiple Entries: Allowed
Subject matter: The goal of the challenge is to capture and convey something about you, or someone else in your life - a work that conveys the spirit of the person, or captures a specific aspect of their life or personality. You may post a properly credited published work by another author, but we encourage you to have a go at writing an entry, since the subject matter should be the subject you know best.

So use your powers of description! Join in!

In great deeds something abides, in great fields something stays.
Forms change and paths and bodies disappear,
But spirits linger to consecrate ground for the vision place of the soul.
And reverent men and women from afar, and generations that know us not,
And that we know not of shall come here to ponder and to dream.
And the power of the vision shall pass into their souls.
------------------ In Great Deeds from The Civil War: The Complete Works

This is a spoken song on The Civil War: The Complete Works 2-disk soundtrack. I love the imagery and message it sends. Charlie Daniels reads it and his voice is perfect for it. He also does the Prologue to the musical.

On the 12th April, 1861, Confederate guns opened fire on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, thus beginning the bloodiest conflict in American history. Six hundred and twenty thousand casualties. More than all other American wars combined. The Civil War remains this Nations single most defining experience, ultimately giving new meaning to the word Freedom. Walt Whitman, a young newspaper man destined to become America's greatest poet, wrote, "Future years will never know the seething hell and black infernal background of this war, and it's best they should not. The real war will never get in the books."

The fiddles and other instruments for the music to this are very poignant and fitting for the words. The Walt Whitman quote is one of my all-time favorites.

Anyway... that is my contribution for the day. :)

I'm feeling a little 'meh' about this, because it doesn't say what I wanted to say, but it does say something so I'm going with it.
